Moses Itauma Accepts Mike Tyson’s Youngest Heavyweight Champion Record Is Unbreakable

Posted : 28 May 2025

British heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma has admitted that breaking Mike Tyson’s record as the youngest heavyweight world champion is now beyond reach. Tyson claimed the title in 1986 at just 20 years and four months old, and Itauma passed that age recently.

Itauma explained that turning professional opened his eyes to how unpredictable boxing can be. He noted that since he started, the heavyweight division has been dominated by champions like Daniel Dubois, Oleksandr Usyk, and Tyson Fury, making a rapid rise to the top unrealistic.

Despite this, Itauma’s career is progressing well, with his recent two-round victory over Mike Balogun extending his unbeaten streak to 12 wins, including 10 knockouts.

Although he was once promoted as the teenager destined to break Tyson’s record, Itauma dismissed this as a marketing ploy rather than a serious expectation. His focus now is on steady development and gaining experience before targeting a world title.

Several potential opponents have been linked to him, such as Joe Joyce, Martin Bakole, Jermaine Franklin, and Otto Wallin, with plans for Itauma to appear on the undercard of Dubois’ title fight against Usyk in July at Wembley Stadium.

Looking ahead, Itauma anticipates his next fights will be more about gaining experience than headline bouts. He mentioned that his team wants him to complete a series of 10-round fights to build stamina and ring craft before stepping up in competition.

While acknowledging the challenges of finding tough but marketable opponents, Itauma remains focused on gradual progress and seizing the right opportunities when they come.
