Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather to Face Off in Exhibition Bout

Posted : 05 September 2025

Former world champions Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather are set to meet in an exhibition fight next year, in an event promoted by CSI Sports/Fight Sports. Specifics on the date, venue, broadcast partners, and rules have not yet been released.

Legends Step Back into the Ring

Tyson, 59, the former undisputed heavyweight champion, and Mayweather, 48, retired undefeated with 50 wins across multiple weight divisions, are both icons of boxing. Tyson called the matchup “something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen,” adding that the sport has entered “a new era of the unpredictable.”

This will mark Tyson’s second return to the ring following a 19-year retirement, his first fight ending in a controversial loss to Jake Paul in November. Mayweather, meanwhile, has competed in several exhibitions since retiring in 2017, most recently defeating John Gotti III last August.

Exhibition Rules and Stakes

As with most exhibition bouts, no official winner will be declared, and the outcome will not affect either fighter’s professional record. Mayweather emphasized the spectacle, saying, “You already know that if I am going to do something, it’s going to be big and legendary. I’m the best in the business of boxing. This exhibition will give the fans what they want.”

The Business Behind the Bout

While the matchup features two of boxing’s biggest names—Tyson, the youngest heavyweight champion in history, and Mayweather, unbeaten across five weight classes—questions remain about the competitive legitimacy. Tyson is nearing 60, and Mayweather spent much of his career several divisions below Tyson’s heavyweight frame.

Exhibition fights like this, and others such as Tyson vs. Paul or Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis, continue to blur the line between sport and entertainment. Tyson’s previous bout against Paul, streamed on Netflix, drew massive viewership with 65 million concurrent streams at its peak, highlighting the commercial appeal of these events.

As BBC Sport journalist Kal Sajad notes, the focus here is as much on spectacle and business as it is on boxing, a formula both Tyson and Mayweather have mastered over their careers.
