Manny Pacquiao to End Retirement with WBC Title Fight Against Mario Barrios

Posted : 09 May 2025

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is set to return to the ring at age 46 after a four-year retirement, reportedly to challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on July 19 in Las Vegas, according to ESPN.

Pacquiao, who made history by winning 12 world titles across eight weight divisions, last fought in 2021 when he lost to Yordenis Ugas in a unanimous decision. His comeback bid has been approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirming plans for the bout.

Under WBC regulations, a former champion like Pacquiao is permitted to seek a title shot upon returning from retirement. His highly anticipated return will coincide with two other major events in his life — his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and his candidacy in the upcoming Philippine Senate election.

Despite the lengthy break from boxing, Pacquiao remains one of the sport’s most celebrated figures, with a professional record of 62 wins, 8 losses, 2 draws, and 39 knockouts.

Mario Barrios, the reigning WBC welterweight champion, enters the bout with a 29-2-1 record, including 18 knockouts. He retained his title in his most recent appearance last November, drawing with Abel Ramos on the undercard of the Tyson-Paul event.

A match against Pacquiao presents Barrios with a high-profile opportunity to defend his title against one of boxing’s all-time greats in what promises to be a widely watched event.
