Liam McCracken Eyes UFC Contract After Surviving Near-Fatal Bus Accident

Liam McCracken is preparing for one of the biggest opportunities of his MMA career, but his journey to the UFC's doorstep has been anything but straightforward. The Liverpool fighter is set to compete on Dana White's Contender Series in Las Vegas, three years after surviving a horrific road accident that left him with life-threatening injuries.

McCracken was out running near his home in Liverpool when he stepped into the road without seeing an approaching bus. The vehicle struck him and dragged him underneath for around 18 metres over seven seconds before coming to a stop.

Witnesses initially feared the 25-year-old was dead after finding him unconscious and suffering severe blood loss. However, several passers-by, including a paramedic who had emergency equipment in their vehicle, rushed to help. McCracken believes their intervention was crucial in keeping him alive until an ambulance arrived.

The accident caused extensive injuries, including four fractures in his back, two slipped discs in his neck, three broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. He also suffered a broken nose, a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a torn meniscus and numerous other injuries.

When McCracken regained consciousness, his daughter was reportedly his first concern. At the time, she had only recently turned one, and he says his immediate priority was simply being grateful that he had survived.

The road back to fighting was long and uncertain. Doctors initially considered whether McCracken would need a metal rod inserted into his back, a procedure that could have ended his professional MMA career. Further examinations eventually showed that the surgery was unnecessary, but his recovery remained complicated.

After months of rehabilitation, McCracken underwent knee surgery and was forced to begin parts of his recovery again. His rehabilitation ultimately lasted almost two years, involving several operations, extensive physiotherapy and a gradual return to combat training.

Before the accident, McCracken had already built an impressive professional record, winning five of his first six fights and attracting attention as a potential future UFC fighter. His comeback fight eventually ended with a rear-naked choke victory over Brazil's Jhon Bryan.

Although he admitted that he was not at his best that night, simply stepping back into competition represented an enormous personal achievement. McCracken described the experience as almost surreal after everything he had endured.

The accident has also changed his outlook on life. McCracken says he now appreciates ordinary things such as walking because he understands how quickly they can be taken away. With two children, he also sees MMA as a route towards financial security and providing his family with opportunities that might not be possible through a conventional career.

Now, his attention is firmly on his Contender Series opportunity against Mexican lightweight Silvestre Sanchez. A convincing victory could earn him the UFC contract he has worked toward for years and provide a remarkable conclusion to his comeback story.

McCracken believes the experiences of the past three years have prepared him for the pressure ahead. Having already overcome a near-fatal accident and an exhausting rehabilitation, he says he now feels mentally equipped to deal with whatever comes his way inside the cage.
