Organisers of the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) monthly tournament have said that no fewer than 20 boxers are expected to feature in the boxing challenge scheduled for Saturday, March 28.
The event will hold at the Agege Stadium in Lagos State, with eight competitive bouts and two exhibition fights lined up.
The tournament, regarded as Nigeria’s longest-running amateur boxing series, is organised by the LBHF with the backing of the Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association.
Director of the tournament, David Mohamed, said the event would feature contests across the men’s 50kg, 55kg, 60kg, 65kg, 70kg and 75kg categories, alongside exhibition bouts in the lighter divisions.
According to him, the bouts will see boxers drawn from different parts of Lagos compete for honours, highlighting the depth of grassroots talent in the state.
He listed some of the match-ups to include Mujeeb Olasunkanmi (Ikorodu) against Akeem Salisu (Ajegunle) in the 50kg category, Saliasu Hamzat (Ikorodu) versus Kalid Akeem (Oshodi) in the 55kg, and Ajisola Habeeb (Ikorodu) taking on Ibrahim Opeyemi (Surulere) in the 60kg.
In the 65kg division, Samodu Alabede (Alimosho) will face Ishola Azeez (Mushin), while the 70kg bout will see Ibrahim Kazeem (Ikorodu) up against Fasasi Faesol (Ojo).
The 75kg category will feature Lekan Kolawole (Ikorodu) against Kingsley Friday (Ipaja).
Mohamed added that female boxers would also be in action, with Mariam Tijani (Lagos Island) facing Nura Sulaimon (Ojo) in the 48kg, while Sofiat Yakub will take on Anina Adekinwonsa in the 51kg.
He described the event as a prelude to the forthcoming IBILE format tournament, which will host monthly competitions across Lagos’ five divisions comprising of Island, Badagry, Ikorodu, Mainland and Epe.
“This will culminate in a grand finale.
“We are excited that the tournament continues to grow every month, with new boxers emerging.
“Providing this platform has not only engaged the athletes but has also produced world-class talents for Lagos and Nigeria,” Mohamed said.
LBHF, founded in 2010 by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the development of amateur boxing in Nigeria.
The March 28 tournament serves as a vital stepping stone for these athletes as they prepare for the upcoming IBILE division-based competitions. By maintaining this consistent platform, the LBHF ensures the continued discovery and refinement of boxing talent across Lagos State.
