LBHF 150th Championships Set for Lagos Boxing Milestone

The Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) will mark a significant milestone on Saturday when its Lagos Central Division hosts the 150th edition of its Divisional Championships in Lagos.

The monthly tournament will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, with boxers from across the state expected to compete in 10 bouts.

Organised in conjunction with the Lagos State Boxing Association (LABA), the championships serve as a major grassroots platform for identifying and developing amateur boxing talent in Lagos.

The competition operates across the state’s five divisions — Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe — with representatives from each division progressing towards the end-of-year Governor’s Belt competition.

LBHF Director David Mohammed said the landmark 150th edition would combine competitive bouts with two secondary school exhibition contests involving young aspiring boxers.

The girls’ 40kg exhibition will feature Soliat Issa of Guest Senior Secondary against Josaino Ayodeji of Onike Senior Secondary, while Habibu Idowu of Elegbata Secondary will face Habudulai Nurudeen of Alimujadu Secondary in the boys’ contest.

In the women’s category, Aminat Tajudeen of Yaba LCDA will face Rokibat Alayande of Lagos West LCDA in the 50kg division, while Rukayat Bello of Yaba LCDA takes on Daramola Balogun of Mainland LG at 60kg.

The men’s programme will see Olorunjuwon Bello confront Hammed Oyeyemi in the 50kg category, with Kola Ogunsemore and Gbolahan Abdulraman set to battle in the 60kg division.

Rasheed Tajudeen will meet Habeeb Ajisola at 65kg, while Abdulahi Robin and Adeola Aiyegboyin will contest the 70kg category.

Ibrahim Akolade will face Isah Jimoh in the 75kg class, while Quam Adesanya and Fawaz Alato will complete the programme in the 80kg category.

Mohammed said the championships had grown increasingly competitive as boxers seek to earn places in the Governor’s Belt competition.

He said the IBILE structure had now become fully established, with the five divisions producing representatives for the grand finale.

According to him, the continued support of boxing fans and local councils has helped sustain the monthly competition while strengthening its grassroots development objectives.

He added that the organisers would continue to introduce innovations aimed at making the championships more competitive and attractive while creating opportunities for emerging boxers.

The LBHF, founded in 2010 by Wale Edun, former Minister of Finance, is a non-profit initiative focused on developing amateur boxing talent in Lagos.

With the support of LABA, the championships provide competition across various weight classes, from flyweight to heavyweight.

Mohammed described the tournament as Nigeria’s longest-running amateur boxing development programme, noting that it has consistently been held on the last Saturday of every month.
