As part of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to fostering youth engagement and sports development, the Lagos State government, in collaboration with Yucateco Boxing Promotions, commissioned the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Boxing Gymnasium at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, stated that there is no better way to address youth empowerment and engagement than by creating alternative opportunities for them to channel their energy, as sports have been recognized as a tool to empower youth towards self-realization.
“Boxing in our community is a unique sport because we have a vibrant youth population, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Honorable Mobolaji Ogunlende. With this facility, we can produce champions,” he said.
Speaking further, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, stated that the state cannot engage all youths at the same time. However, capturing them in groups makes it easier to take them off the streets and provide opportunities for their growth, especially for those interested in boxing.
"This is a well-structured facility that allows them to channel their energy, practice, and prepare to compete on a global scale," he added.
"As a government, we cannot do it alone, which is why we continue to call for partnerships, and one of those partnerships has resulted in this initiative. Our plan is to replicate this across the five divisions in the state.
If we can achieve this, we will be able to take more youths off the streets and into the boxing arena, where they can develop their sportsmanship, skills, and ability to compete on a global scale,” he concluded.
Fatodu commended the donor and Chief Executive Officer of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, Imadu, for this notable initiative, which provides young boxers in the state with an opportunity to sharpen their skills and continue to dominate in the sporting industry.
