Joshua Eyes Historic Third World Title, Vows to Stay Calm Against Fury

Posted : 15 October 2026

Anthony Joshua has vowed to remain calm and disciplined when he faces Tyson Fury in their highly anticipated heavyweight clash on December 11. The British-Nigerian boxer believes controlling his emotions will be crucial as he targets another major milestone in his career.

The two former world heavyweight champions will meet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The bout has been confirmed for global live coverage on Netflix and will mark their first professional meeting after years of speculation and failed negotiations.

Joshua said he would avoid the mistakes he believes Deontay Wilder made during his three-fight rivalry with Fury. Wilder lost twice and drew once against the British heavyweight, with Fury repeatedly recovering from difficult moments to regain control of their contests.

Speaking to The Ring's Mike Coppinger, Joshua explained that Wilder sometimes became too eager to finish Fury after hurting him. According to Joshua, that approach often consumed energy and gave Fury opportunities to recover.

“Wilder took those fights very personally, and that could be quite exhausting, especially when you hurt someone and try to finish them,” Joshua said.

He added that Wilder might have had better opportunities if he had remained patient instead of trying to force a stoppage.

“You lose a lot of energy, and then Tyson comes back,” Joshua said. “Wilder could have gotten the job done if he was a bit more calm, cool and collected.”

Joshua insisted that he would not allow frustration to dictate his strategy against Fury. He plans to remain composed throughout the fight rather than rush his attacks in search of an early knockout.

“I do not believe that would be me. I am going to keep a calm head,” he added.

Beyond the personal rivalry, the fight offers Joshua an opportunity to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. The vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Super heavyweight title has been reported as being at stake, although the final championship arrangements should be confirmed by the relevant sanctioning body.

Joshua and Fury have both previously lost their world titles to Oleksandr Usyk. Their upcoming encounter therefore offers both men an opportunity to strengthen their standing in the heavyweight division.

Joshua enters the contest with a professional record of 30 wins, four defeats, and 27 knockouts. Fury has recorded 36 victories, two losses, and one draw, with 25 wins by knockout.

Fury's promoter, Frank Warren, has also indicated that heavyweight unification fights could take place in 2027. He said his promotional stable has three of the division's four recognised champions and intends to pursue unification contests next year.

For Joshua, however, the immediate priority is Fury. A victory would strengthen his legacy and place him among the heavyweight boxers who have won world championship honours across three separate reigns.
