Jean Dos Santos Lands Flying Knee KO to Claim AKO Lightweight Title in Abuja

Posted : 25 August 2025

Fight fans in Abuja, Nigeria, witnessed one of the most explosive finishes of the year, as Jean Dos Santos claimed the inaugural AKO lightweight title with a lightning-fast knockout.

The headline bout at AKO 10 pitted Dos Santos against local favorite Jibrin Inuwa Baba in a highly anticipated lightweight championship clash. Both fighters entered the contest with strong records under the African Knockout (AKO) promotion, founded by former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. While Baba was known for his durability, Dos Santos arrived with a reputation for finishing fights and a versatile striking arsenal.

The fight barely had time to get going before it was over. Just moments after the opening bell, Dos Santos unleashed a perfectly timed flying knee that landed flush on Baba’s chin, sending him crashing to the canvas. The sequence drew comparisons to Jorge Masvidal’s famous knockout of Ben Askren at UFC 239, though Dos Santos followed up with ground strikes along the fence before the referee intervened. The entire contest lasted no more than eight seconds.

Baba, who had never previously suffered a knockout loss, remained down for several minutes, raising concerns among fans. Thankfully, he regained consciousness and was able to walk out of the cage on his own, though visibly shaken by the devastating finish.

For Dos Santos, the emphatic win not only secured championship gold but also announced him as one of AKO’s most dangerous fighters, delivering a highlight-reel moment destined to be remembered across African MMA.
