Islam Makhachev Admits UFC Career Is Entering Its Final Stages

Islam Makhachev has acknowledged that his UFC career is entering its latter stages as the Russian prepares for his first defence of the welterweight championship. The 34-year-old will face Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Saturday, August 15.

Makhachev has competed in the UFC since 2015 and has established one of the most impressive records in the promotion. After successfully dominating the lightweight division, he moved up to welterweight and captured a second championship, adding another major achievement to his career.

The Russian now wants to make the most of the time he has remaining in the sport. Speaking ahead of UFC 330, Makhachev said he would prefer to compete every three or four months because he recognises that he is no longer at the beginning of his career.

A victory over Machado Garry would also further strengthen Makhachev's place in UFC history. He is chasing a 17th consecutive UFC victory, which would move him beyond Anderson Silva's long-standing record of 16 straight wins in the promotion.

Makhachev's achievements have also fuelled comparisons with his former teammate and coach Khabib Nurmagomedov. While Nurmagomedov retired undefeated with a 29-0 record, Makhachev has built his own legacy by becoming a two-division champion and establishing himself among the sport's elite.

UFC president Dana White has previously suggested that Makhachev is moving in the direction of being considered the greatest fighter in UFC history. His upcoming title defence against Machado Garry therefore carries significant implications for both his championship reign and his wider legacy.
