Inoue Retains Undisputed Title with Eighth-Round TKO Over Cardenas

Posted : 05 May 2025

Naoya Inoue, Japan's unbeaten boxing sensation, successfully defended his undisputed super bantamweight title on Sunday by defeating American Ramon Cardenas in the eighth round in Las Vegas. Inoue, who is known for his aggressive fighting style, was knocked down in the second round by a left hook from the underdog but quickly regained his composure.

Despite the early setback, the 32-year-old champion pressed the attack and landed a series of powerful punches that forced referee Thomas Taylor to stop the fight at 45 seconds into the eighth round, giving Inoue his 27th victory by knockout.

The fight marked Inoue's return to Las Vegas after four years, and it was his first fight outside of Japan since 2021. Inoue's victory improved his record to an impressive 30-0, further solidifying his position as one of the most dominant figures in the sport.

The win also marked his fourth successful defense of the undisputed 122-pound world title. Inoue, nicknamed "The Monster" for his fearsome knockout power, had not fought beyond the fourth round in his last 11 victories, making this a significant challenge in his career.

Inoue reflected on the unexpected knockdown, saying he was surprised but was able to calmly regain control of the fight. He attributed the brief lapse in focus to a loss of distance in the second round but adjusted his strategy moving forward. With this victory, Inoue continues to solidify his legacy as one of the most formidable and consistent champions in the sport.
