Inoue Retains Titles, Takei Claims WBA Belt in Thrilling Tokyo Dome Showdown

Posted : 07 May 2024

In a thrilling match at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, Naoya Inoue, dubbed "Monster," showcased his resilience by overcoming a first-round knockdown to defend his WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF junior featherweight titles against Luis Nery. Inoue rallied back with knockdowns in rounds two and five, sealing his dominance with another knockdown in the sixth round, prompting the referee to halt the fight at 1:22 into the round.

Meanwhile, on the same card, Japan's Yoshiki Takei secured the WBA bantamweight belt with a 12-round unanimous points decision victory over Jason Moloney. Takei's powerful punches overwhelmed Moloney, who appeared hesitant throughout the bout, ultimately costing him the chance to claim the title.

In another bout, WBA bantamweight champion Takuma Inoue faced adversity after being knocked down in the first round by Sho Ishida but recovered swiftly to retain his title with a unanimous decision victory. Additionally, Seigo Yuri Akui successfully defended his WBA flyweight title against Taku Kuwahara, securing a unanimous 12-round points decision victory in his first title defense. Former IBF junior featherweight champion TJ Doheny also emerged victorious, securing a fourth-round technical knockout against Bryl Bayogos.
