The much-anticipated WBO Africa Cruiserweight title fight between unbeaten Nigerian boxer Lekan “The Engine” Muibi and defending champion Godday Appah has been postponed following an injury to the title holder.
The championship contest, originally scheduled for July 31 in Lagos, was to be staged by Balmoral Promotions and broadcast live on DAZN.
Quadriga Sports Management, which represents Muibi, announced the postponement in a statement on Tuesday, saying organisers informed the company that Appah sustained an injury during training and would be unable to defend his title as planned.
While expressing disappointment over the development, Quadriga wished the champion a speedy recovery and voiced hope that the bout would be rescheduled without delay.
“We understand that injuries are part of this sport, and we wish him a speedy and full recovery,” the statement said.
It added that it expected Appah to honour the challenge once he returns to full fitness.
Quadriga commended Dr. Ezekiel Adamu and Balmoral Promotions for putting together what it described as one of the most anticipated boxing events in the country.
The management also noted that considerable financial and logistical investments had already gone into Muibi’s preparations for the title contest but described the postponement as an unavoidable setback.
According to the company, Muibi will continue training to ensure he remains in top condition ahead of the announcement of a new fight date.
“Quadriga Sports Management will ensure that Lekan ‘The Engine’ Muibi is primed and ready to go once a new date is announced,” the statement said.
The management expressed confidence that the unbeaten cruiserweight would be ready to face any opponent whenever the title fight is eventually rescheduled.
It also thanked boxing fans for their continued support, assuring them that the postponement would not derail Muibi’s quest for championship success.
Despite the unexpected delay, Muibi's camp remains optimistic that the WBO Africa Cruiserweight title contest will take place once Appah has fully recovered, with preparations continuing to ensure the Nigerian challenger is ready for the opportunity.
