Harlem Eubank Urges Cousin Chris to Pursue Canelo Over Benn Rematch

Posted : 17 June 2025

Harlem Eubank has voiced his desire to see cousin Chris Eubank Jr chase a legacy-defining showdown against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez rather than rekindling his feud with Conor Benn. The unbeaten welterweight, who has been steadily rising through the ranks, believes that the 35-year-old middleweight should aim for the pinnacle of the sport before retiring.

Although a rematch with Benn has been floated following their grudge match earlier this year, Harlem feels that the opportunity to face Canelo offers a more fitting conclusion to Eubank Jr's career.

Their original clash was delayed by two years due to Benn’s failed drug tests, but the eventual fight in April saw Eubank Jr outpoint Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Harlem acknowledged the financial incentives involved in a rematch but is skeptical about its appeal, especially considering Chris’s age and achievements.

Harlem also criticised the weight stipulations from the first fight between Eubank Jr and Benn, particularly the rehydration clause that limited post-weigh-in weight gain. Eubank Jr, being naturally larger, appeared visibly drained ahead of the bout and was fined £375,000 after initially missing weight by a narrow margin before passing a second weigh-in on fight day.

Harlem argued that such constraints endanger fighters' health and competitiveness. “Trying to weaken an opponent with rehydration clauses and these types of things should be eradicated from the sport,” he said.

Although any potential clash with Canelo Alvarez would need to wait until 2026, due to the Mexican superstar's upcoming fight against Terence Crawford in September, Harlem believes it remains the more meaningful path.

He emphasised that fighters often face tempting offers late in their careers but encouraged his cousin to seek the highest stage possible. With Eubank Jr’s window closing, Harlem wants to see him pursue greatness on his own terms—through a fight that could truly define his legacy.
