Glasgow in Focus: Nigeria fine-tune boxing squad with Ghana test bout

Posted : 06 May 2026

Nigeria’s boxing team is stepping up its build-up to the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a crucial international friendly against long-time rivals Ghana in Accra.

Rather than just a routine contest, the May 7 showdown at the Accra Sports Stadium is being positioned as a key evaluation platform for the coaching crew, offering a clearer picture of the team’s readiness ahead of the global event in Glasgow.

The fixture will see seven Nigerian male boxers compete across various weight classes, while three female fighters will represent the country in the 54kg, 57kg, and 71kg divisions.

The blend of categories is designed to test depth, adaptability, and ring discipline under competitive conditions.

Team Nigeria is scheduled to arrive in Accra ahead of the bouts, allowing the athletes time to acclimatize and sharpen their focus before stepping into the ring.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Nigeria Boxing Federation Technical Committee Chairman, Babatunde Laguda, emphasized that the encounter goes beyond results, highlighting its importance in assessing tactical execution and individual performance levels.

Similarly, NBF Vice President, Omonlei Imadu, disclosed that more international engagements are in the pipeline, underlining a deliberate strategy to expose the boxers to high-level competition before the Games.

With the Commonwealth Games set for July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, this regional clash presents Nigeria with an early opportunity to refine its squad and build momentum on the road to one of the sport’s biggest stages.

This international friendly serves as a vital benchmark for the Nigerian pugilists as they seek to sharpen their skills against top-tier regional opposition. By prioritizing high-stakes exposure, the federation is ensuring the athletes are mentally and physically prepared to challenge for medals in Glasgow.
