Gennady Golovkin Announces Bid for World Boxing Presidency

Former world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has confirmed his candidacy for the World Boxing presidency.

Kazakhstan’s legendary boxer Gennady Golovkin has announced that he will stand as a candidate in the upcoming election for President of World Boxing, the sport’s international governing body. The former unified middleweight world champion confirmed his decision in an official statement released on Friday.

Golovkin, widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of his generation, enjoyed a remarkable career both as an amateur and professional. A silver medallist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, he later dominated the middleweight division, holding multiple world titles and earning global acclaim for his skill and discipline inside the ring.

Since retiring from boxing in 2022, the 43-year-old has taken on leadership roles in sports administration, including his appointment as President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee in 2024. His bid for the World Boxing presidency marks his next step in shaping the sport’s global future.

Golovkin will face Mariolis Charilaos, the former head of the Hellenic Boxing Federation (2021–2025), in the election. The upcoming vote follows the decision of current president Boris van der Vorst to step down after years of intense travel and leadership responsibilities.

World Boxing was formed in 2023 as a response to the International Olympic Committee’s decision to strip the Russian-led International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition. The new body has been tasked with rebuilding international trust in the sport and securing boxing’s place in future Olympic Games.

The World Boxing presidential election will be held on November 23 during the World Boxing Congress in Rome, Italy. With his vast experience and Olympic background, Golovkin’s candidacy is expected to draw significant attention from across the boxing world.
