Former middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin has been confirmed as the new president of World Boxing, the governing body announced at its annual Congress in Rome on Sunday.
The Kazakhstani fighter, once considered among the best pound-for-pound boxers globally and a silver medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, was elected as the sole candidate for the position. Golovkin succeeds Boris van der Vorst, who had announced in September that he would not seek re-election.
Golovkin expressed gratitude for the appointment, emphasizing that the election marked the start of a broader mission. “It is a privilege to be elected... but this is just the beginning,” he said in a statement released by World Boxing. “On the road to Los Angeles 2028, we will restore trust in Olympic boxing to secure our place in Brisbane and beyond.”
World Boxing, which received provisional recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in February, will oversee boxing competitions at the 2028 Olympic Games. The organization was established following the expulsion of the International Boxing Association (IBA) by the IOC in June 2023.
Golovkin’s appointment signals a new chapter for Olympic boxing, as the sport works to regain credibility and strengthen its global governance ahead of the upcoming Games.
