Four Arrested Over Murder of Former World Boxing Champion Zolani Tete

South African police have arrested four people in connection with the killing of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot in the Eastern Cape last week. Police confirmed that the suspects, aged between 22 and 28, were taken into custody over the weekend.

Tete, 38, was attacked on 21 August while arriving at his home in Mdantsane. Police said armed men opened fire as he waited for the gate to open. A 27-year-old woman who was travelling with him was also wounded and remains in hospital.

One of the suspects, a 22-year-old man, has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder. The attempted murder charge relates to the female passenger who survived the shooting. The other suspects are facing proceedings connected to the investigation, including allegations involving unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Police have warned against speculation while the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet established or publicly confirmed a motive for the attack.

Tete's Boxing Legacy

Tete was one of South Africa's most accomplished boxers, winning the IBF junior-bantamweight world championship in 2014 before claiming the WBO bantamweight title in 2017.

He made boxing history in 2017 when he stopped Siboniso Gonya with his first punch after just 11 seconds. The victory remains one of the fastest knockouts in a world title fight.

Tete had been preparing to return to professional boxing after completing a four-year anti-doping suspension in July 2026. His death came just weeks after he became eligible to resume his career.

South Africa's Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie paid tribute to Tete, describing him as one of the country's finest fighters and lamenting that he would not have the opportunity to make his planned return to the ring.
