Fabio Wardley has revealed he had no reservations about accepting a fight against Joseph Parker and is determined to showcase his credentials as a world-class heavyweight by aiming for a knockout victory. The bout is scheduled for 25 October at London’s O2 Arena, with the winner expected to become Oleksandr Usyk’s next opponent.
Both Wardley and Parker hold high rankings in major boxing organizations, with Wardley recognized by the WBA and Parker by the WBO. Rather than waiting for Usyk to recover from injury, Wardley opted to take on the New Zealander to cement his place among the sport’s elite heavyweights.
“It wasn’t much of a consideration,” the 30-year-old Briton told BBC Sport. “I believe I should be in the conversation with the top heavyweights. Perhaps the public thinks that needs to be proven, and what better way to do that than by facing Joseph Parker, the world’s number two heavyweight?”
The two fighters appeared at their first press conference in London on Thursday. While the event featured the usual promises of dominance and knockouts, no major confrontations occurred.
Joseph Parker, a former world champion aged 33, has revitalized his career with notable victories over Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole. His journey toward another title opportunity has faced setbacks, including a cancelled bout against then-IBF champion Daniel Dubois in February.
Parker, currently the WBO interim champion, was set for a world title fight with Usyk, but it was postponed due to the Ukrainian champion’s injury. The WBO has granted Usyk a 90-day medical extension to finalize terms with Parker, potentially delaying a decision on whether he will defend his title or vacate it until December.
