The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has initiated the process to officially name Moses Itauma as the mandatory challenger for its heavyweight title. This development follows Itauma's impressive fifth-round stoppage of Jermaine Franklin over the weekend. WBO President Gustavo Olivieri confirmed on social media that he will formally recommend the young fighter for the top position within the sanctioning body.
Itauma now holds the number one ranking with both the WBO and the WBA, signaling a rapid rise for the 21-year-old prospect. While his ascent is gaining momentum, current WBO titleholder Fabio Wardley has expressed a desire to delay any potential domestic clash. Wardley currently shares the same promoter, Queensberry, and trainer, Ben Davison, with the rising contender.
Wardley is currently preparing for a major showdown against Daniel Dubois scheduled for May 9. The winner of that high-stakes bout is expected to receive an order to defend the title against Itauma. Speaking to the media, Wardley suggested that there is no rush to finalize a fight between the two stablemates, noting that there are multiple world titles available for both to pursue.
The champion emphasized that Itauma has several other milestones to achieve before they meet in the ring. Wardley pointed out that with four major belts in the division, there is enough room for both fighters to find success independently. He urged fans and pundits to remain calm as the landscape of the heavyweight division continues to shift.
Beyond the WBO route, Itauma has several paths toward a world championship. The WBA may order him to face secondary titleholder Murat Gassiev, while the WBC previously ordered an eliminator between Itauma and Lawrence Okolie. Despite these various options, undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk has not yet shown interest in defending his crowns against the young Londoner.
