Daniel Dubois Battles Back to Stop Fabio Wardley and Reclaim World Heavyweight Glory

Posted : 11 May 2026

Daniel Dubois produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Fabio Wardley by 11th-round stoppage and capture the WBO world heavyweight title in a dramatic all-British clash in Manchester on Saturday night.

The 28-year-old recovered from two early knockdowns in a brutal contest at the Co-Op Live Arena, earning the second world title of his professional career after previously losing the IBF version to Oleksandr Usyk last year.

Wardley made a stunning start to the fight, sending Dubois to the canvas within seconds of the opening bell. The defending champion then landed another powerful overhand right in the third round, forcing Dubois to take a knee for a second time before beating the count.

However, Dubois gradually took control of the contest with relentless pressure and heavy punches that visibly damaged Wardley over the middle rounds. The challenger repeatedly connected with crushing shots as Wardley’s face became badly swollen and bloodied.

Despite the punishment, Wardley continued to fight with determination and resilience. By the later rounds, he was struggling to see clearly, with severe swelling around one eye and blood pouring from cuts on his face, yet the bout continued as the crowd watched a gruelling battle unfold.

Dubois finally secured victory in the 11th round after another series of unanswered blows forced referee Howard Foster to stop the fight. Many observers felt the contest could have been halted earlier due to the extent of the damage suffered by Wardley.

The fight carried extra tension after heated exchanges before the bout. Wardley had suggested Dubois would have been a “bin man” outside boxing, prompting the London heavyweight to promise he would “take out the trash” in the ring.

After the fight, Dubois praised Wardley’s toughness and described the encounter as a true war. He said he had relied on his heart, resilience, and skills to regain his place at the top of the heavyweight division.

Promoter Frank Warren later confirmed that a rematch clause exists in the contract, potentially setting up another showdown between the two British heavyweights in the future.
