The highly anticipated showdown between WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli and Mexican boxing icon Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has been postponed and is now expected to take place in late October, according to a report from Ring magazine.
The championship contest had originally been scheduled for September 12 in Riyadh, where it was expected to headline a major boxing event. However, organizers have revised the card, with the clash between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn now set to serve as the main event. The scheduling adjustment has pushed Mbilli's title defense against Alvarez to a later date.
The report was further reinforced after Mbilli's promoter shared the news on social media, signaling that the change in schedule has been accepted by the champion's camp.
Mbilli enters the bout as the reigning WBC super middleweight champion after being elevated from interim champion following the retirement of Terence Crawford. Crawford had captured the undisputed super middleweight championship by defeating Alvarez last September before announcing the end of his professional career, prompting the WBC to promote Mbilli to full champion status.
For Alvarez, the fight represents an opportunity to reclaim the WBC title he once held during one of the most successful careers in modern boxing. The 35-year-old has won world championships across multiple weight divisions, ranging from light-middleweight to light-heavyweight, since turning professional as a teenager at just 15 years old.
The Mexican superstar brings a remarkable professional record of 63 victories, including 39 knockouts, alongside three defeats and two draws. His résumé features some of the biggest names in the sport, making him one of boxing's most accomplished champions.
Mbilli, meanwhile, heads into the contest with an unbeaten record of 29 wins and one draw from 30 professional fights. Although the Frenchman has established himself as one of the division's rising stars, the meeting with Alvarez will represent the toughest challenge of his career and his first bout against an opponent with the Mexican legend's level of experience and pedigree.
