Bivol Defeats Beterbiev to Reclaim Light-Heavyweight Crown

Posted : 24 February 2025

Dmitry Bivol reclaimed the undisputed light-heavyweight championship with a hard-fought victory over Artur Beterbiev in Riyadh. Four months after their initial showdown, Bivol secured a majority decision win over his 40-year-old Russian compatriot, with judges scoring the fight 116-112, 115-113, and 114-114.

The victory handed Beterbiev his first loss in 22 professional fights, as Bivol dominated the early rounds and maintained control despite his opponent's resilience.

Meanwhile, Martin Bakole's hopes of upsetting Joseph Parker in the heavyweight division were dashed after stepping in on just two days’ notice. The Congolese fighter replaced Daniel Dubois, who withdrew due to illness, but struggled with the lack of preparation time.

Parker knocked Bakole down in the second round with a powerful right hand before the fight was stopped, leaving the late replacement unable to mount a challenge against the former WBO champion.

Another short-notice competitor, British electrician-turned-boxer Josh Padley, took on American star Shakur Stevenson in a WBC world light-heavyweight clash.

Padley, who was installing solar panels just days before the fight, accepted the bout after Floyd Schofield withdrew. Despite his determination, Stevenson’s superior skill proved too much, and the referee stopped the fight in the ninth round after Padley was knocked down for the third time.
