The Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF) held elections for two key board positions at the National Stadium, Abuja, following prolonged debates on election modalities.
In an election supervised by the National Sports Commission, coach and referee/judge Babatunde Laguda emerged victorious, securing 21 votes to beat Ashimota (7 votes) and Ajose (2 votes). With this result, Laguda was elected Technical Director on the NBF Board.
The victory sparked jubilation, with members of the boxing fraternity surrounding Laguda—whose father once served as a media officer at the National Stadium, Surulere in the 1970s—to congratulate him. Despite a heated campaign, Laguda’s opponents later joined in congratulating him on his success.
The Nigerian boxing community, including administrators, referees, coaches, and athletes, praised the appointment of the experienced Laguda, who was himself a boxer during his school days.
In another closely watched contest, Fadilat Tijani from Ogun State defeated Kehinde Obareh by 22 votes to 9 to claim the position of Athletes’ Representative on the Board.
Meanwhile, it will be recalled that Nigeria sent three boxers to the World Boxing Council contests in September. Unfortunately, all were disqualified due to improper registration. The team, led by Adura Olalere, comprised two male boxers and one female boxer, with national coach Anthony Koyegwachi—junior brother of Nigerian boxing legend Peter Koyegwachi, now based in the USA—left out of the trip.
