Anthony Joshua’s Return to the Ring Delayed as Elbow Recovery Continues

Posted : 24 June 2025

Former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is still not ready to return to the boxing ring, as he continues to recover from elbow surgery, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

Joshua, 35, underwent a successful surgical procedure earlier this year following his loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. The operation, aimed at resolving a long-standing elbow issue, was seen as essential to his long-term fitness. However, Hearn has confirmed that the recovery process is ongoing, and the timing of Joshua’s return remains uncertain.

“He’s had the operation, which went very well, and now he’s just rehabbing it,” Hearn stated. “I believe it will be about six weeks until he can punch again properly.”

This timeline suggests that Joshua may not be back in action until the final quarter of 2025, depending on how quickly he regains full training capacity. While September to December has been discussed as a possible window for his comeback, no firm dates or opponents have been confirmed.

The delay puts a temporary hold on speculation surrounding potential blockbuster matchups, including possible bouts with Tyson Fury or a rematch with Dubois. Hearn emphasized that any future fights will be based on Joshua’s full recovery and physical readiness.

Joshua is currently undergoing rehabilitation, including light pad work, with his team carefully monitoring his progress. While he remains focused on a return to form, Hearn has hinted that 2026 could be the final full year of Joshua’s professional career, depending on his performance post-recovery.

For now, fans will have to remain patient as Joshua prioritizes healing over headlines, with hopes that the British boxing star can return stronger in the months ahead.
