Anthony Joshua Makes First Public Appearance in London After Fatal Nigeria Crash

Posted : 06 April 2026

Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua stepped into the public eye for the first time since he survived a devastating car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

The British boxer was seen at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night, watching longtime friend Derek Chisora in what was billed as the veteran’s final fight.

Joshua had kept a low profile since the December 29 accident, during which he was involved in a collision that tragically killed Ghami and Ayodele while he was a passenger. In recent months he focused on recovery and mourning, with his promoter emphasising that time away from the spotlight was necessary before he considers returning to the ring.

Arriving dressed in a white tracksuit alongside promoter Eddie Hearn, Joshua walked past media at the venue but drew little public attention before the bout.

Despite past speculation about a possible mega‑fight with American rival Deontay Wilder, the two men shared no interaction backstage, with Wilder making his way through the corridor without acknowledgement.

Joshua last competed before Christmas, stopping YouTuber‑turned‑boxer Jake Paul in Miami. Though his future plans remain unclear, talk continues around major potential matchups, including a clash with British rival Tyson Fury.

Speaking briefly in a ringside interview, Joshua praised the sport’s growth and voiced his support for Chisora in what was an emotional night for British boxing.
