Anthony Joshua eyes Watford takeover, calls it serious investment

Posted : 06 May 2025

British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua is considering a significant investment in Watford Football Club, a team based in his hometown and competing in the English Football League (EFL) Championship. Raised in Watford and still residing nearby, Joshua’s connection to the club runs deep, and he’s now evaluating the possibility of taking a financial stake as part of his broader business ambitions.

Having conquered the boxing world with two reigns as a unified heavyweight champion, Joshua is looking beyond the ring toward stable and strategic ventures. In an interview with Seconds Out, he revealed his desire to transition from simply earning to making smart investments that generate long-term value. Watford FC, he noted, is one such opportunity under review.

Joshua explained that his team has been actively exploring options in private equity and venture capital. Rather than indulging in lavish spending, he’s intent on placing his earnings into assets that offer both growth and community impact. The possibility of backing Watford reflects this mindset — a blend of business sense and hometown pride.

Although no formal deal has been finalized, Joshua emphasized the seriousness of the discussions. He described the prospect of investing in Watford as a calculated and meaningful step, adding that a successful promotion campaign could significantly benefit the town’s economy — and potentially open up local business opportunities, such as retail ventures near Vicarage Road.

While Joshua admits he’s not an avid football enthusiast, he holds fond memories of fans filling the streets on matchdays. The passion and unity brought about by Watford matches left an impression on him, fueling his interest in helping the club regain Premier League status. He also expressed goodwill toward the club, regardless of whether he ultimately becomes involved.

This move wouldn’t be Joshua’s first foray into business. The 35-year-old has previously invested in property and various enterprises, building a growing portfolio beyond sports. Watford’s 14th-place finish in the 2024/25 season underscores the challenge ahead, but also the potential for revival — a mission that could align with Joshua’s ambitions.

Adding to the appeal is Watford’s recent history of Nigerian players, such as Odion Ighalo, William Troost-Ekong, and Emmanuel Dennis — all of whom helped build a strong connection with Nigerian fans. Joshua’s potential investment would not only mark a new chapter for the club but also resonate with supporters in both the UK and Nigeria, strengthening cultural and sporting ties.
