A decision on whether former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will step back into the ring in 2025 is expected later this week, according to promoter Eddie Hearn. Joshua has been sidelined for nearly 14 months following a dramatic fifth-round stoppage loss to fellow British heavyweight Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
The defeat halted the 36-year-old’s momentum under trainer Ben Davison and delayed another potential world title shot. However, Hearn indicated that a tune-up fight could be arranged before the end of the year.
“We will make a decision this week in terms of whether he will fight this year. We have to decide by this weekend, basically,” Hearn told Sky Sports. “It doesn’t really matter where it is. You won’t know until maybe even fight week. That’s the whole purpose of it.”
Hearn described the potential return as both exciting and unusual, noting that the bout might not generate significant revenue. “I think it would be so good for him but bizarre at the same time because there’s no money in the fight. We’re not going to start using him to sell tickets. Literally, he will just pop up on a show,” Hearn said. “He’s really up for it. I think it would be great for him. I’d love him to go in there and just smash someone up.”
Joshua’s loss to Dubois came after he had won four consecutive bouts following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, who ended his world champion reign in 2021. Usyk also defeated fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury twice, leading to Fury’s retirement and removing the chance of a lucrative all-British clash with Joshua.
Recent reports, however, suggest Fury may return to the sport next year, potentially reigniting hopes of a high-profile showdown with Joshua.
