Alex Pereira Wants Ciryl Gane Rematch After Controversial UFC Defeat

Posted : 08 September 2026

Former two-division UFC champion Alex Pereira has made it clear that he wants a rematch with Ciryl Gane as his next fight after their heavyweight clash in June.

Pereira moved up to heavyweight with the ambition of becoming the first fighter in UFC history to win championships in three divisions. However, Gane stopped him in the second round of their interim heavyweight title fight at UFC Freedom 250 in June.

The Brazilian has continued to question the circumstances surrounding the finish, claiming that Gane landed illegal strikes to the back of his head during the decisive sequence. Strikes to the back of the head are prohibited under the unified MMA rules, although Gane's victory officially stands.

After taking time to recover from the defeat, Pereira has now identified Gane as the opponent he believes makes the most sense for his return. He said he expects the rematch to happen and plans to work toward another opportunity to capture a third UFC title.

Pereira's preferred route could become more realistic because Gane's expected undisputed title fight with heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall remains uncertain. Aspinall is still recovering from serious eye problems suffered in his previous fight with Gane and has yet to receive a definitive return date.

Gane is currently the interim heavyweight champion and has twice fallen short in previous attempts to claim the undisputed title. If Aspinall remains unavailable for an extended period, the UFC could consider giving Gane another fight before the champion returns.

For Pereira, the rematch would provide an opportunity to erase the memory of his first heavyweight defeat while keeping his ambition of becoming a three-division UFC champion alive. The 39-year-old has already held UFC titles at middleweight and light heavyweight.

However, the UFC has not officially confirmed a second fight between Pereira and Gane. For now, the matchup remains Pereira's preferred option, although the heavyweight title picture will depend heavily on Aspinall's recovery.
