African Boxing Championships: Ajishola Leads Nigeria’s Resurgence in Nairobi

Posted : 21 October 2026

Team Nigeria revived their medal ambitions at the 2026 African Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, with a series of impressive victories sending several boxers into the finals.

Khadijat Ajishola spearheaded the Nigerian resurgence at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, defeating Kenya’s Martha Amina by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women’s bantamweight category (51–54kg).

Competing from the blue corner, Ajishola outpointed her Kenyan opponent to secure a convincing victory and strengthen Nigeria’s challenge for continental honours.

Precious Anine also delivered a crucial result, overcoming Egypt’s Yomna Ayyad on points in the women’s 60–65kg division to secure her place in the final.

Blessing Orakwe and Patricia Mbata further boosted Nigeria’s campaign with victories in their respective bouts, earning places in the finals as the country’s medal prospects improved.

In the men’s division, Ridwan Raheem defeated Algeria’s Ismail Bekhsis in the 60–65kg category to advance to the semi-finals, keeping his hopes of reaching the final alive.

The victories marked a significant turnaround for the Nigerian contingent following an underwhelming start to the championships, which brought together some of the continent’s leading amateur boxers.

Nigeria’s improving performance has provided renewed optimism as the competition approaches its decisive stages, with the advancing boxers now seeking to convert their progress into medals.

The team will be hoping to sustain its momentum in the remaining bouts and strengthen Nigeria’s position among Africa’s leading boxing nations.
