Posted : 17 September 2025

The AFC World Series Mixed Martial Arts Championships came to a close in Lagos after five days of electrifying action, drawing wide acclaim from fans and participants. Spectators described the event as one of the most engaging sporting showcases in recent memory, praising the high level of competition and the professionalism of the officiating.

Funsho Adekunle, a passionate MMA supporter, highlighted the competitiveness of the fights and credited referees for ensuring fair outcomes without controversy. Another fan, Chinedu Nwaneri, applauded the athletes’ performances and called for more inclusivity, particularly increased opportunities for women in the sport.

Victor Akhimien, Technical Director of Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts, said the event demonstrated the potential of MMA in the country. He emphasised the importance of sponsorships for the sport’s future and revealed plans to involve grassroots athletes, with the aim of eventually securing MMA’s inclusion in the Nigeria University Games (NUGA).

Event spearhead Raad Aswani hailed the fighters’ dedication, noting that their effort and spirit created an unforgettable week of entertainment for both live audiences and online viewers. He stressed that the AFC platform is designed to turn dreams into reality, adding that the enthusiasm of Nigerian and African fans shows a strong appetite for future tournaments.

Athletes also reflected on their experiences. Joseph Jackson celebrated his victory in the 65.8kg category, describing it as the start of a promising career. His opponent, Goodnews John, accepted defeat as a learning curve and vowed to return stronger. Plateau’s Moses Kure also caught attention with a swift submission victory over Kenneth Love, promising to continue thrilling fans while highlighting the AFC’s potential as a global brand.

The championships, staged at Teslim Balogun Stadium from September 11 to 15, brought together 100 fighters and ended on a note of celebration, with both fans and organisers looking forward to bigger events in the years ahead.
