Abia Hosts Maiden South-East Amateur Boxing Championship to Revive Regional Boxing Fortunes

Posted : 25 June 2026

The quest to restore the South-East's prominence in Nigerian boxing received a major boost on Thursday as the maiden Abia State South-East Amateur Boxing Championship got underway at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The championship has attracted boxers, coaches, sports administrators and stakeholders from across the region, with organisers positioning the competition as a strategic platform for grassroots talent identification and the development of future champions.

Dignitaries at the opening ceremony included the Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba Nwadinma; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Jane Maxwell Igwe; the Deputy Commissioner of Police; National Sports Commission Zonal Coordinator, Ben Ezema; South-East Boxing Representative, Nnamdi Iro Orji, represented by Nigeria Boxing Federation Board Member, Paul Ifeanyi Ngadiuba; and the Director of Sports, Obioma George.

Speaking during the event, Ngadiuba stressed the urgent need to rebuild boxing in the South-East, noting that the recent National Boxing Trials exposed a shortage of quality boxers from the region.

According to him, grassroots competitions such as the championship are vital for discovering, nurturing and preparing young athletes for national and international competitions.

Also speaking, Ezema described boxing as a life-changing sport capable of creating opportunities for young people and steering them towards productive careers. He commended the Abia State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for its commitment to sports growth and youth empowerment.

Director of Sports, George, said the championship would provide a valuable avenue for identifying emerging talents while encouraging coaches and officials to embrace modern approaches to athlete development.

The Permanent Secretary, Igwe, charged participating athletes to uphold discipline, respect and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. She also encouraged visitors to explore the commercial opportunities in the state by patronising locally made products in Aba.

Declaring the championship open, Commissioner Nwadinma reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Alex Otti to youth and sports development, while wishing all participants successful and injury-free contests.

The tournament is expected to play a significant role in revitalising amateur boxing in the South-East and creating a pipeline of talents capable of competing at the highest levels.

The championship represents an important step towards rebuilding the region's boxing tradition and strengthening grassroots development. Organisers will be hoping the competition produces a new generation of athletes capable of excelling on national and international stages.
