Abia dominate maiden South East Amateur Boxing Championship in Umuahia

Abia State delivered an outstanding performance to emerge as the overall champions of the maiden South East Amateur Boxing Championship, which concluded after three days of action in Umuahia.

The hosts topped the medals table with an impressive haul of 13 medals, comprising eight gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. Enugu State finished second with four gold, four silver, and one bronze medal, while Imo State placed third with one gold, one silver, and five bronze medals. Anambra and Ebonyi States occupied fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

The championship featured six men's and seven women's weight categories, with boxers from across the South East showcasing their talent in a series of thrilling contests.

Abia's dominance was evident in the men's division, where John claimed gold in the 60kg category, Chidiebere Chukwuemeka triumphed in the 65kg class, while Iheke Okechukwu secured victory in the 70kg division.

The hosts were equally impressive in the women's events, with Victor Sarah (51kg), Ola Ogbonna (59kg), Joseph Blessed (60kg), Chisara Augustine (70kg), and Ocheze Nwokocha (75kg) all capturing gold medals to strengthen Abia's grip on the championship.

The tournament concluded with medal presentations, certificates, and cash rewards for outstanding performers, marking a successful inaugural edition of the regional boxing championship.

The successful staging of the championship highlighted the growing standard of amateur boxing in the South East and provided a platform for emerging talents to showcase their abilities. Abia's dominant display capped an impressive campaign and set the benchmark for future editions of the competition.
