Posted : 13 December 2025

The Nigerian boxing contingent for the 2025 Africa Youth Games has officially settled in the host nation, Angola. Led by the experienced national coach Anthony Konyegwachie, the team features three pugilists representing Nigeria in this multi-sport event, which brings together athletes aged 14 to 17 from 54 African nations.

The Africa Youth Games, designed to nurture sporting talent, foster integration, and promote cultural exchange, also serve as a qualifying event for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. Nigeria will field two male boxers and one female boxer in the competition. Abijuwon Faruk will compete in the 50kg male category, Solomon Joshua in the 70kg male category, while Mayowa Ayomide will represent the country in the 48kg female division.

Accompanying the athletes is the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Vivian Azimene. The NBF Vice President, Omonlei Imadu, who visited the boxers at their training camp in Abuja before their departure, praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their support and emphasized the high quality of the selected athletes.

“Firstly, I wish to commend the leadership of the National Sports Commission for their support. They recognized the importance of exposing these young boxers to international competition. This experience will further strengthen their techniques and understanding of the sport beyond our borders,” Imadu said.

He added, “I am confident in the ability of these boxers to secure Youth Olympic Games qualification in their respective weight categories. The athletes selected are among the best in the country, and Coach Anthony Konyegwachie has prepared them exceptionally well for this event. We are hopeful for a successful outing in Angola.”

The boxing competition is set to begin on Monday, December 15, while the Africa Youth Games, which commenced on December 10, will conclude on Saturday, December 20.
