20 Nigerian Wrestlers head to Accra ahead of 13th African Games

Posted : 05 March 2024

The contingents of the Wrestling Federation have departed from Yenagoa, where the team had its training camp ahead of the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

The 20-member delegation, led by the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Dr. Daniel Igali, left Yenagoa on Tuesday for Port Harcourt airport en route to Abuja before departing the country for Ghana on Wednesday.

Speaking about the hopes of the Wrestling Federation for the Games, Dr. Daniel Igali, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, stated, "This is the African Games, and as you know, our athletes have been in a training camp here in Yenagoa. I think the expectation we have from the athletes is for everyone to give their best efforts. We believe that with the work we've done in the past few weeks, a 100 per cent performance would bring good results to Nigeria."

The captain of the Nigeria Wrestling team, Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu, expressed her desire to make Nigeria proud with her performance. She said, "Going for the African Games, my expectation is to perform my 100 per cent best, and by the special grace of God, I will defend my title, which is the gold medal."

Ashton Mutuwa, a debutant in the African Games competing in the 125kg category, expressed confidence in giving a good account of himself despite making his first appearance at the Games. He stated, "I'm going there with high expectations, and I'm going to wrestle hard. We've been training hard, and I'm looking forward to the African Games. Yeah, I would really like to get gold."

The 13th African Games begin on March 8th, and the wrestling event is scheduled for March 9th, 10th, and 11th, 2024, in Accra, Ghana.
