World Netball (WN) and Netball Australia (NA) have intensified their efforts to secure netball’s inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. This week, WN CEO Fiona Harold, NA CEO Stacey West, and NA President Liz Ellis AO met virtually with Brisbane 2032 CEO Cindy Hook and Director of Sport Brendan Keane to discuss the feasibility and benefits of netball becoming an Olympic sport.
The meeting follows a feasibility study commissioned by World Netball to evaluate whether a bid for Olympic inclusion aligns with the sport’s long-term interests.
Fiona Harold emphasized the significance of netball's Olympic ambitions, stating that its inclusion would not only enhance the Olympic movement but also advance World Netball’s core strategies of growth, participation, and inspiration. She reaffirmed the organization's commitment to pursuing Olympic status as long as it aligns with netball’s broader vision.
Stacey West echoed this sentiment, highlighting netball’s prominence as the leading sport for women and girls in Australia and its growing popularity among men. She expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of showcasing the sport on the global stage at a home Olympics.
In addition to their discussions with Brisbane 2032 organizers, WN and NA are actively engaging with the International Olympic Committee and the Australian Olympic Committee to explore netball’s Olympic potential. These conversations are part of a broader strategy to ensure netball’s expansion and recognition at the highest level of international sport.
