The San Antonio Spurs ruled out Victor Wembanyama for the second half of Monday night’s 115-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers due to a left rib contusion. The 22-year-old big man sustained the injury in a collision with 76ers forward Paul George near midcourt with 10:47 remaining in the second quarter.
Wembanyama briefly returned to the bench after initially heading to the locker room, but requested to be subbed out again with just 44.3 seconds left before halftime. He did not return for the second half, and the Spurs confirmed he would sit out the remainder of the game.
Coach Mitch Johnson expressed cautious optimism, noting, "I know he came back and he just didn't finish. At halftime, I was told he wasn't coming back. I haven’t heard anything else up to this point. I think it’s a positive that he felt like he could come back, and he played the last four or five minutes of the half."
Wembanyama logged 15 minutes, 40 seconds in the first half, which counts toward eligibility for postseason awards under NBA rules granting exceptions for players who meet at least 15 minutes. He finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. The French star, a top contender for both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, must play at least 20 minutes in one of San Antonio’s remaining three games to maintain postseason award eligibility.
Coming off three consecutive games with 30+ points, 15+ rebounds, and three blocks—a streak second only to Shaquille O’Neal since blocks were tracked in 1973-74—Wembanyama remains the Spurs’ leading scorer (24.9 PPG), rebounder (11.6 RPG), and shot-blocker (3.1 BPG). His impact on both ends of the floor continues to be pivotal for San Antonio as the regular season winds down.
