San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has joined several NBA players in speaking out against reported incidents of fan violence involving supporters of both the Spurs and the New York Knicks during the NBA Finals in New York.
The controversy emerged after videos circulated on social media appearing to show Knicks fans attacking Spurs supporters and tearing jerseys in the aftermath of San Antonio’s 115-111 win in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden. According to reports citing the New York Police Department, dozens of arrests were made across multiple incidents linked to fan disturbances.
Wembanyama strongly criticised the behaviour, stressing that basketball rivalry should remain respectful. He emphasised that, despite the intensity of competition, the sport should never justify violence between fans.
Knicks centre Karl-Anthony Towns also addressed the situation, urging supporters to enjoy the game without crossing boundaries. He said that while passion is part of the NBA Finals atmosphere, respect must remain central and physical confrontation has no place among spectators.
Spurs forward Julian Champagnie, who grew up in Brooklyn, said he felt no personal threat during his time in New York but urged fans to avoid taking rivalry too far. He added that no outcome in a basketball game should lead to confrontations away from the court.
A spokesperson for the Spurs confirmed the team had not experienced any security issues during their stay in New York.
Meanwhile, rookie Dylan Harper, a New Jersey native, said the hostile reception in New York was unlike anything he had experienced, noting that the intensity of the crowd was part of the city’s basketball culture but should remain within sporting limits.
