Wembanyama Leads Spurs Past Thunder 111-103 in Game 7 Thriller to Reach NBA Finals

Posted : 31 May 2026

The San Antonio Spurs clinched their first trip to the NBA Finals since 2014 by defeating the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 on Saturday night. The high-stakes Game 7 victory at the Paycom Center wrapped up a grueling 4-3 series triumph on the road. The result officially dethroned the defending champions and completed a rapid turnaround for a franchise that won just 22 games two seasons ago.

Victor Wembanyama spearheaded a highly balanced offensive effort for the visitors. The young center posted 22 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks to anchor the interior defense. Following the final buzzer, Wembanyama received the Earvin "Magic" Johnson Trophy as the Western Conference Finals Most Valuable Player. He averaged over 27 points and 10 rebounds per game across the hard-fought seven-game stretch.

San Antonio established control early by shooting a blistering 57 percent in the opening quarter to capture a 32-25 advantage. The Thunder responded behind an explosive display from MVP finalist Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The guard scored 19 of his game-high 35 points in the first half. His relentless driving kept the hosts within striking distance, trailing 56-53 at the halftime intermission.

The pressure intensified in the fourth quarter when Oklahoma City sliced the deficit to just six points. The Spurs defense answered the call with several clutch stops. Reserve center Luke Kornet delivered a pivotal block on Isaiah Hartenstein at the rim to halt a dangerous fast break. Minutes later, rookie point guard Stephon Castle secured a crucial offensive rebound and scored to extend the cushion back to eight.

Seven different players scored in double figures for San Antonio. Julian Champagnie contributed 20 points, hitting six crucial three-pointers. Castle finished with 16 points, while De'Aaron Fox added 15 points and three steals. For the Thunder, Cason Wallace scored 17 points, and Alex Caruso chipped in 12 points. However, center Chet Holmgren struggled heavily against the physical defense, managing only four points before exiting the contest.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson praised his squad's cohesion after the victory, noting that the group knew back in October they had a special opportunity. The historic win marks the first time in 12 years that the Texas franchise will contest for a title. The Spurs are scheduled to host the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night.
