WBLA 2024: MFM suffers first defeat against Al Ahly Sporting Club of Egypt

Posted : 09 December 2024

Nigeria's representative at the ongoing Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA) 2024, MFM Ladies, have started on the wrong foot with a disastrous 99-49 defeat against the defending champions, Al Ahly Sporting Club of Egypt.

It was a disappointing start for the MFM Ladies in Dakar, Senegal, as they were outplayed by the defending champions.

The fatigued Nigerian team, who arrived in Senegal yesterday, slumped to a 49-99 defeat to the reigning champions, Al Ahly Sporting Club of Egypt. However, MFM's coach, Joy Ochuko, provided no excuses in her assessment of the outcome.

“Despite the tiredness, we could’ve done better. There were some shots, just putting your hands up, we could have stopped them.

"We were lackadaisical; maybe we believed that they were better than us, so they’ve won. Even if they’ve won, let them win struggling. We could’ve fought till the end,” she stated.

Despite yesterday’s collapse, MFM’s top-scoring playmaker, Cynthia Gbihi, exuded confidence ahead of their next Group A game today against hosts ASC Ville De Dakar at 8 p.m. Nigeria time.

“For our next game, I believe it will be much better than this. Because this is not how we play, for real.

"Even all of us were actually surprised at the way we played. The next game (today) will be much better,” said Gbihi, who scored 18 points in the blowout loss.

The top two clubs from each of the three four-team groups, plus the two best third-placed sides, will qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition.
