Washington Wizards Win 2026 NBA Draft Lottery as Brooklyn and Indiana Suffer Major Blow

Posted : 11 May 2026

The Washington Wizards emerged as the biggest winners of the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery after securing the first overall selection during Sunday’s event in Chicago. The result positions Washington to add another elite young talent to its rebuilding roster in what many analysts are calling one of the strongest draft classes in recent years.

The Wizards are widely expected to select highly rated BYU star AJ Divantesa with the top pick. The talented scorer impressed throughout the college season with outstanding offensive numbers and has already drawn comparisons to NBA stars such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Tracy McGrady. Washington’s young core already includes Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Trey Johnson, and Bub Carrington, alongside experienced additions Anthony Davis and Trae Young.

Utah received the second pick in the draft, while Memphis and Chicago rounded out the top four. Both Memphis and Chicago were considered fortunate lottery winners after entering the draw with lower probabilities of securing a top selection.

Brooklyn experienced one of the night’s biggest disappointments. Despite finishing with one of the league’s worst records and entering the lottery with strong odds of moving into the top four, the Nets dropped to the sixth pick.

Indiana’s situation proved even more frustrating. The Pacers needed a top-four selection to retain their draft pick, but after landing fifth overall, the selection will now transfer to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of the previous Ivica Zubac trade agreement.

Several prospects are expected to dominate the top of the draft board. Alongside Divantesa, Kansas guard Darren Peterson, Duke standout Cameron Boozer, and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson are all projected to be selected early in the first round.

Cameron Boozer, the son of former NBA player Carlos Boozer, has generated significant attention following an impressive season that showcased his scoring, rebounding, and playmaking abilities. Meanwhile, Caleb Wilson has been praised for his athleticism and defensive versatility despite still developing his perimeter shooting.

The first round of the 2026 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 23, with the second round taking place the following day.
