Victor Wembanyama delivered a remarkable performance on Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 52 points and collecting 24 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a narrow 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The French superstar also recorded eight blocks as San Antonio secured its sixth consecutive NBA win at the Frost Bank Center.
The 22-year-old made an explosive start, scoring 29 points in the first half alone, alongside 15 rebounds and five blocks. His outstanding display made him the first player in the past 30 NBA seasons to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a single half. He also converted all 15 of his first-half free throws, matching a record for the most successful free throws without a miss in a first half during the play-by-play era.
Wembanyama continued to dominate after the break, finishing with personal bests of 52 points and 24 rebounds. His eight blocks also made the performance particularly impressive defensively, as he became the first player since blocks were officially recorded to register at least 50 points, 20 rebounds and eight blocks in a game.
The contest was far from comfortable for San Antonio, however, as Dallas mounted a strong comeback after trailing by 19 points early in the third quarter. The Mavericks eventually moved ahead 103-100 through a P.J. Washington three-pointer, setting up a tense finish between the two teams.
With the score tied at 111 late in the fourth quarter, Wembanyama converted one of two free throws with 24.2 seconds remaining to put the Spurs ahead. Dallas had an opportunity to snatch victory on its final possession, but Kyrie Irving missed a contested jumper, allowing San Antonio to escape with the win.
Dylan Harper contributed 21 points for the Spurs, while Stephon Castle added 17 points and 10 rebounds. De'Aaron Fox also provided valuable support with 10 points. For Dallas, Irving led the scoring with 29 points, while Naji Marshall added 22. Washington finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Cooper Flagg recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Wembanyama also received praise from his team-mates and coach Mitch Johnson, who highlighted his influence at both ends of the court. The Frenchman briefly rolled his right ankle late in the game but returned to help his team close out the contest, later saying he was feeling fine.
The victory extended San Antonio's winning run to six games, improving its record to 6-2, while Dallas suffered its second consecutive defeat. Wembanyama's extraordinary performance further strengthened his growing reputation as one of the NBA's most dominant young players.
