San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was ejected in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals after throwing an elbow that struck Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid in the second quarter. The incident occurred during a physical contest under the basket, leading officials to review the play and upgrade the foul to a flagrant 2, resulting in an automatic ejection.
The Spurs ultimately lost 114-109, allowing Minnesota to level the series at 2-2 ahead of Game 5 in San Antonio. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson defended his player, arguing that Wembanyama has been subjected to excessive physical contact throughout the series and should receive greater protection from officials.
Johnson acknowledged that the action itself was not ideal but insisted frustration had built up due to repeated contact on the 22-year-old star. He suggested that without stronger officiating, Wembanyama would feel forced to “protect himself,” which contributed to the incident.
The play came after Wembanyama rebounded a missed three-pointer and was immediately surrounded by defenders Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels. During the challenge, his arm struck Reid’s jaw area, sending the Timberwolves forward to the floor and prompting the officials’ review.
Teammates expressed mixed reactions, with some believing the contact was not intentional but rather a reaction to constant defensive pressure. Guard De’Aaron Fox noted the foul might have been avoided if an earlier whistle had been called on the play.
Wembanyama finished the game with just four points, four rebounds, and three fouls in 13 minutes—marking the lowest-scoring performance of his career. He did not speak to the media afterward but briefly addressed teammates during halftime to encourage them despite his ejection.
The NBA will further review the incident, with additional disciplinary action still possible under league rules.
