Victor Wembanyama dominates with triple-double as San Antonio Spurs triumph over Toronto Raptors

Posted : 13 February 2024

Victor Wembanyama showcased an extraordinary triple-double performance with 27 points, 14 rebounds, and an impressive 10 blocks, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a convincing 122-99 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

The 20-year-old rookie's remarkable shot-blocking prowess marked the highest tally by an NBA player since Clint Capela in January 2021. Wembanyama now stands as the fifth player in NBA history to achieve at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a single game, joining the elite company of legends Hakeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and former Spurs star David Robinson.

Expressing the increasing challenge of shot-blocking, Wembanyama emphasized the additional effort required as opponents are becoming more cautious when approaching him. The towering 7ft 4in Frenchman, chosen as the number one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, also contributed five assists in a dominant performance. His teammate, Devin Vassell, added 25 points, aiding San Antonio in ending a seven-game losing streak.

In other NBA action, the Minnesota Timberwolves secured a crucial 121-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in a pivotal game at the top of the Western Conference. Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards played pivotal roles, scoring 24 and 23 points, respectively.

The injury-plagued defending champions, the Denver Nuggets, faced a 112-95 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks, with Giannis Antetokounmpo delivering a stellar performance of 36 points and 18 rebounds.

The Philadelphia 76ers halted the Cleveland Cavaliers' nine-game winning streak with a dramatic 123-121 win, featuring Kelly Oubre's 24 points and a game-saving block by Oubre against Donovan Mitchell's lay-up attempt. The New York Knicks suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Houston Rockets as a foul by Jalen Brunson with 0.3 seconds left granted Aaron Holiday three free-throws, securing a 105-103 win for the hosts.

Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors, led by Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry, secured a 129-107 victory over the Utah Jazz. Luka Doncic's 26-point triple-double propelled the Dallas Mavericks to a 112-104 win against the Washington Wizards, and the Charlotte Hornets triumphed 111-102 over the Indiana Pacers.

The Chicago Bulls' DeMar DeRozan and Ayo Dosunmu each contributed 29 points in their 136-126 victory against the Atlanta Hawks, while the New Orleans Pelicans emerged victorious with a 96-87 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
