Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox helped spark a dramatic turnaround for the San Antonio Spurs, leading a commanding 133-95 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals.
Just two nights after a disappointing Game 1 loss, the Spurs duo bounced back in style to level the series at 1-1. The pair, who had struggled in the opener, combined for a far more efficient performance as San Antonio produced its highest-scoring playoff outing since 1983.
Following Game 1, Wembanyama and Fox shared a brief conversation in the locker room that both later described as a moment of reassurance rather than frustration. Fox admitted the team knew they were close despite the narrow defeat and emphasized the importance of resetting mentally.
That response was evident in Game 2, where both stars set a much stronger tone. Fox attacked early, scoring nine points in the opening quarter, while Wembanyama added seven as the Spurs quickly established control.
San Antonio’s improved pace proved decisive, with the team outscoring Minnesota 34-8 in transition. Their aggressive style and ball movement allowed multiple players to contribute, including Stephon Castle, who led the team with 21 points.
Head coach Mitch Johnson highlighted Fox’s ability to dictate tempo, explaining that his aggression creates opportunities for the entire roster. He praised Fox’s decision-making and emphasized the importance of playing through his pace-setting influence.
Wembanyama finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks, continuing his strong postseason form. His presence on both ends of the floor helped anchor a dominant defensive effort that limited Minnesota’s scoring options and built a large halftime lead.
The Spurs also matched a franchise playoff record with 16 made three-pointers, with key contributions from Julian Champagnie, who hit four triples in an efficient shooting display.
Defensively, San Antonio was equally impressive, forcing turnovers and controlling key matchups. Castle’s defensive effort stood out, as he disrupted Minnesota’s ball-handlers and helped sustain the team’s momentum.
The victory marked another example of the Spurs’ resilience, as they improved their strong record following losses. The series now shifts to Minnesota for Game 3, where San Antonio will aim to carry their momentum on the road and overcome a venue where they have recently struggled.
