U18 AfroBasket: D’Tigress Fall to Cameroon as D’Tigers Lose to Chad

Nigeria's U18 D’Tigress and D’Tigers both suffered defeats on Friday at the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Championship in Côte d’Ivoire. The D’Tigress were edged 75-74 by Cameroon after overtime, while the D’Tigers lost 59-50 to Chad.

The D’Tigress came close to securing their second straight victory in Group C at the Salle Polyvalente in Treichville. Nigeria started strongly and led 19-15 after the opening quarter before both teams scored 24 points in the second period, leaving the Nigerian side ahead 43-39 at half-time.

Cameroon gradually turned the game around after the interval. Nigeria managed only nine points in the third quarter, allowing the Central Africans to close the gap before they forced overtime by winning the fourth quarter 17-15 to level the score at 67-67.

The extra period remained tightly contested, but Cameroon held their nerve to edge the overtime session 8-7 and maintain their unbeaten record. Edore Pela led Nigeria with 15 points, while Oluwatobiloba Owolabi added 14 points.

Nimah Ibidunni and Bisola Arowolo contributed 10 points each for the D’Tigress. Nigeria forced 46 turnovers and recorded 29 steals, but Cameroon dominated the boards 61-42, including 22 offensive rebounds that provided valuable second-chance opportunities.

Eveline Toyounon was outstanding for Cameroon, finishing with 24 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists. Charlene Poliwa also made a major contribution with 17 points and 19 rebounds.

The D’Tigers endured another difficult outing in Group A, falling 59-50 to Chad at the Palais des Sports de Treichville. Nigeria led 12-11 after the first quarter but struggled offensively as Chad took control with an 18-11 second-quarter advantage.

Chad extended their lead in the third quarter after outscoring Nigeria 19-15. The Central Africans then held firm in the final period to secure their first victory of the tournament and leave Nigeria searching for answers.

Victor Endurance Sunday produced another strong individual performance for Nigeria, recording 22 points and 10 rebounds. Emmanuel Oshiobugie Idornigie added 14 points.

Nigeria's poor shooting proved costly, with the D’Tigers converting just 11 of 63 field-goal attempts for 17.5 percent. They also committed 33 turnovers, allowing Chad to score 27 points from those mistakes.

Ngaba Yaya led Chad with 15 points and 21 rebounds, while Junior Djibrine added 17 points. The result leaves the D’Tigress second in Group C with three points from two matches, while the D’Tigers remain bottom of Group A after consecutive defeats.
