Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton will be sidelined for the entire 2025–26 NBA season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon in his right leg. The injury occurred during the first quarter of Game 7 of the NBA Championship Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, a match the Pacers ultimately lost 103–91, ending their quest for a first-ever NBA title.
The 25-year-old star collapsed without contact while attempting a drive to the basket and was visibly in pain as he was helped off the court. The devastating injury marked a cruel end to what had been a breakout postseason for Haliburton.
Speaking to WISH-TV, Pacers president Kevin Pritchard confirmed the severity of the injury and the recovery timeline. “The surgery went well,” Pritchard said. “But he will not play next year. We’re not going to risk anything at this point. So, don’t get your hopes up about him returning.”
A two-time All-Star, Haliburton played a pivotal role in the Pacers’ deep playoff run. During the 2024–25 regular season, he averaged 18.6 points, 9.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals across 73 games. In the NBA Finals, despite battling a calf strain sustained in Game 5, he contributed 14 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game.
His Achilles injury is part of a troubling trend in this year’s playoffs, where other top players including Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum and Milwaukee Bucks’ Damian Lillard also suffered similar injuries. The severity of such injuries is well-documented—superstar Kevin Durant, for instance, missed an entire season after rupturing his Achilles during the 2019 NBA Finals.
Haliburton's absence will be a significant blow to Indiana’s aspirations next season, but the team is optimistic he will make a full recovery. As one of the league’s rising stars and a central figure in the Pacers' resurgence, Haliburton’s long-term health remains the franchise's top priority.
