Tyrese Haliburton Makes Emotional Return as Pacers Beat Pelicans

Tyrese Haliburton made a memorable return to the court on Wednesday night, helping the Indiana Pacers secure a 123-120 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans in their NBA season opener.

The two-time All-Star scored 23 points and recorded 12 assists in 33 minutes, marking his first appearance since rupturing his right Achilles tendon during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The emotional occasion brought Haliburton to tears as he spotted Pacers supporters cheering him on from the stands in New Orleans.

Haliburton had expected his emotions to peak during Indiana's home opener on Friday, but the sight of travelling fans celebrating his return proved overwhelming.

He described the experience as an emotional journey and expressed gratitude for the support he received from the crowd, family and close friends who travelled to witness his comeback.

Pascal Siakam led Indiana with 30 points, while Haliburton took charge in the fourth quarter after struggling to find his rhythm earlier in the game. He scored 13 points in the final period, helping the Pacers overturn a deficit and edge ahead in the closing minutes.

His decisive baskets proved crucial as Indiana held on for the three-point victory, with New Orleans missing late opportunities to force overtime.

The comeback was particularly meaningful after Haliburton missed the entire previous season while recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered in the 2025 NBA Finals.

He acknowledged that his conditioning still needs improvement, but credited the experience and support of fellow guard Dejounte Murray, who has also recovered from an Achilles tear.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle praised Haliburton's performance, especially his ability to influence the game after playing more than 30 minutes for the first time in approximately 16 months.

Haliburton's return also offered renewed hope for Indiana after a difficult campaign without its leading playmaker. With family members, his wife and close friends watching from the stands, the guard described his comeback as a moment of gratitude after months of rehabilitation and uncertainty.

The Pacers will now turn their attention to Friday's home opener against the Dallas Mavericks as Haliburton continues rebuilding his match fitness.
