Trae Young to Decline $48.97M Option, Set for Free Agency Amid Wizards Future Plans

Posted : 18 June 2026

Trae Young is expected to decline his $48.97 million player option for the 2026-27 season and become a free agent on Monday, according to sources cited by Marc Spears of Andscape. While the move opens the door for league-wide interest, the Washington Wizards are still viewed as strong contenders to retain the four-time All-Star.

Young’s decision comes after a turbulent season shaped by injury and mid-year transition. He began the campaign with the Atlanta Hawks aiming to reinforce his status as a franchise leader capable of guiding a deep playoff run in the Eastern Conference. However, his momentum was halted early after suffering a sprained MCL just five games into the season, sidelining him until December.

During his absence, Atlanta’s emergence of younger talent, particularly Jalen Johnson, contributed to a shift in the team’s direction. By January, the Hawks had traded Young to the Wizards in a deal involving CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, marking a significant reset for both franchises.

Young went on to play only a limited number of games for Washington, averaging 17.9 points and 8.0 assists across his appearances for both teams combined. Despite the brief stint, the Wizards moved forward with a long-term vision centered around him as the primary playmaker for their rebuilding roster.

Washington believes Young can form a strong partnership with newly acquired veteran Anthony Davis, envisioning the duo as a potential All-Star pairing capable of lifting the franchise back into playoff contention. The organization is also placing significant emphasis on developing its young core, which includes Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, Bub Carrington, and an upcoming No. 1 draft pick.

After enduring multiple seasons of heavy losses, the Wizards are betting that a blend of experienced leadership and emerging talent can accelerate their rebuild. Young’s upcoming free agency decision will now play a key role in shaping the team’s next competitive phase.
