Top Basketball Academies Gear Up for FAZ3 Tournament in Lagos

Posted : 19 June 2025

Organisers of the maiden FIBA Africa Zone 3 (FAZ3) Academies Basketball Tournament have confirmed that the event will take place from July 4 to 8, 2025, in Lagos, with a large number of top academy teams expected to participate.

The highly anticipated competition has already generated widespread excitement across the region, with teams from Ghana and Benin Republic confirming their participation. Additional entries from other countries in the zone are expected ahead of the June 20 deadline.

Speaking in Lagos, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Toba Shinkaye, announced a venue update due to the rainy season and the number of scheduled matches. While the Warriors Basketball Court in Ilupeju was originally selected, some games will now be held at the Dolphins Indoor Basketball Court, Onikpètèsi, Lagos.

“There’s great enthusiasm from the academies. This tournament offers a much-needed platform to showcase the region’s emerging basketball talent,” Shinkaye said.

Adding to the excitement, Webber Engineering Nigeria Ltd. is putting together a robust entertainment package for spectators—including a high-energy dunk contest and other side attractions to enhance fan engagement.

Vice Chair of the Organising Committee and Chairperson of the Lagos State Basketball Association, Mrs. Barbara Harper, expressed her optimism:

“I’m excited about the responses we’ve received so far, and I look forward to a successful and impactful tournament.”

Also commenting, Col. Sam Ahmedu (Rtd.), President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, hailed the initiative as a major step forward for grassroots basketball development in the region.

“This is the first time we’re hosting an academies tournament in Zone 3, and I’m excited to witness the best of young talent in action.”
